Progress report for
Produce and disseminate open, global groundwater datasets

Achievement at a glance
At the end of 2023, additional national groundwater level monitoring data from six (6) countries (Nepal, Mexico, Israel, Austria, Spain, UK) have been added to the Global Groundwater Monitoring Network (GGMN) platform (https://ggis.un-igrac.org/view/ggmn/) and the data from 10 countries has been updated. At the end of 2023, the GGMN hosted the groundwater level monitoring data from 30 countries (vs. 23 countries in 2022).Challenges faced in implementation
- Even if the data in the GGMN is accessible and can be downloaded in csv files, the data sets do not comply yet to the FAIR principles.- The different data format, the data files quality make sometime very challenging and time consuming their integration into the GGMN
- To convince countries to share data

Actions
Supporting countries (national institutions in charge of groundwater) to understand and report on the status of their groundwater resources using groundwater monitoring data; producing information for decision-making with groundwater monitoring data.Improving groundwater global data set to support researchers in particular modellers.
