Progress report for
Developing networks on the environmental management of enclosed coastal seas (EMECS)
Achievement at a glance
International Center for Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas (EMECS) was going to co-organize the EMECS13 Conference in the UK in September, 2020 with Estuarine & Coastal Science Association (ECSA), and has started the call for abstracts, selected some students who were going to participate in the Students and Schools Partnership (SSP) session scheduled to be held in the conference and so on.Unfortunately, the conference has been postponed due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19, and it will be held in the same venue in September, 2021. The conference will bring together a global multi-disciplinary community of researchers, educators and practitioners to address issues of outstanding importance in science (both natural and social) and the management of estuaries and coastal seas in a rapidly changing world.
Aside from preparation for the EMECS13 Conference, we organized / co-organized the following international seminars on marine environmental conservation.
-EMECS International Seminar (July 2019)
Theme: How should sustainable estuarine and marine ecosystem be evaluated?
Venue: Kobe city, Hyogo, Japan
-Satoumi Conference in Onna Village 2019 (December 2019)
Theme: Aiming to be the most coral-friendly island in the world
Venue: Onna village, Okinawa, Japan
-Seminar on Biodiversity of coastal seas and restoring environment (February 2020)
Theme: New problems and the latest monitoring methods
Venue: Kobe city, Hyogo, Japan
They were held to discuss and exchange of views on how the sustainability of marine ecosystems around the world should be evaluated and to introduce the current condition and countermeasures against emerging issues, such as ocean acidification, marine litter including microplastics, eutrophication and so on.
To share knowledge and information on marine conservation obtained through our activities etc., we have created the database on world enclosed coastal seas. Also, the EMECS Facebook page has been opened to disseminate information on our activities.
