Progress report for
Management plans for commercially and ecologically important coastal snapper and grouper fisheries in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Achievement at a glance
WCS supported the local government of West Nusa Tenggara in conducting data collection, data analysis, and then generating fishing regulations through issuing two fisheries action plans for four areas: Saleh Bay, Cempi Bay, Waworada Bay, and Sape. The fishing rules include bans on damaging fishing gear used in destructive fishing practices such as bombs, cyanide, spearguns when used with compressors, using coral to weigh down traps, and nets with small mesh size. The provincial government has also promoted a size limit (weight limit of fish) with a limit of 500 grams for 9 species and 300 grams for 3 species of fin fish; this was achieved through developing agreement with collectors and aggregators. Zoning rules for MPAs in the four areas are also embedded in the action plans.Challenges faced in implementation
The challenges for developing the action plans include limited capacity for sound fisheries management, poor information and awareness on the status of key fish stocks, use of damaging fishing gears, poor participation of fishers, and low compliance of fishers to some regulations.Beneficiaries
According to our monitoring and evaluations, the greatest beneficiaries to this commitment are fishers and collectors. Under this commitment, the local government is also a beneficiary.
