Achievement at a glance
The Government of Indonesia and four provincial governments have established and expanded new MPAs in West Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Ache from 2017. The goal of 500,000 ha has been surpassed; as of December 2020, nine MPAs encompassing 823,576 ha have been designated and an additional nine MPAs totaling 604,762 have been proposed, but are not legally designated.Challenges faced in implementation
Revision of local government laws shifted the legal authority for coastal MPA management from the district government level to the provincial government level.Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries for this commitment are the provincial governments, district governments, universities, and local communities near to (inside and outside) MPA boundaries.
