Progress report for
Capacitar a 80 autoridades policiales en temas de legislacin ambiental
Achievement at a glance
In an effort, to decrease illegalities in the protected areas, we continue our goal to train authorities on environmental legislation yearly. Many of our authorities are not versed in environmental legislation therefore, it limits their job. Through this capacity building we seek to empower the authorities and rangers of the protected areas. 2019, in conjunction with the Institute of Forest Conservation and Development, Protected Areas and Wildlife (ICF), the Municipal Environment Unit (UMA) together with the Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA) came together to carry out a training and planting of 50 Red Mangroves in the Flowers Bay community in honor of arbor day.The main objective was to develop technical and legal knowledge about the natural resources present in the Bay Islands and that are objects of conservation of the protected areas to strengthen the capacities to deal with environmental complaints. So, training was provided by the co-managing and support organizations of the BINMP to 12 police authorities (naval force, firefighters, Public Ministry etc.), on the importance of the mangrove and its environmental law, then it was explained what role it plays within the ecosystem and all its benefits.
unfortunately we were not able to conduct the training becuase of COVID-19 in March, the island of Roatn closed its ports of entry. Although in August 2020 a smart opening test began, which consists of different phases. The government offices functioned with limited personnel. Hence, the priority at the moment was the containment of the virus and implementation of its security measures just as such a curfew with mobilization hours from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm and mobilization according to the number of your identity card, but this may change depending on the number of Covid-19 cases that are reported in the country. Also, tropical storms (ETA and IOTA) have generated several unexpected changes, making it difficult to carry out diferent activities.
