Progress report for
Tokio Marine's Mangrove-based Value Co-Creation 100-Year Declaration
Achievement at a glance
For fiscal 2019, we continued efforts to promote Mangrove Planting Project in nine countries: Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and Fiji. Total planting area reached 310 hectares for fiscal 2019 and a cumulative total of 11,240 hectares as of March 2020.
One of our achievements in fiscal 2019 is a construction of concrete breakwater-mangrove hybrid coastal defense system in Damak Province, Indonesia, implemented by OISCA International and local cooperators. It protects local residents from tsunami, storm surges and coastal erosion as a hybrid shield or barrier. A concrete breakwater protects not only the village itself but also the mangroves planted.
Although the concrete breakwater has just been constructed, boats traveling along the coast have begun to bypass the breakwater, and the engine of the boat no longer agitates the earth and sand. It also became the place for people to relax and enjoy their time. It was a landmark of the village and a treasure was created, where you could see the sight of hanging fishing lines and relaxing.
Next Steps
We will continue planting mangroves and plan to construct breakwaters, watchtowers, and some other facilities in order to conserve mangrove forests and to promote Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR).
Support for sustainable polyculture such as silvofishery, beekeeping utilizing mangrove flowers, resting sheds and the construction of mangrove promenades in plantation areas are also planned.
Through these initiatives, we will contribute to protect people living in the planting areas and the surrounding areas and to reduce the impacts of climate change as possible as we can.
Beneficiaries
People living in the mangrove planting areas and the surrounding areas are the beneficiaries.
Actions
With the aspiration to continue planting mangroves for 100 years, we are constantly thinking of ways to implement Mangrove Planting Project in a sustainable fashion.
The key success factor lies in the conservation of mangrove forests and the empowerment of the local communities and people. Therefore, we have taken actions focusing on protecting ecosystem and people from natural disasters (promoting Eco-DRR) as described above. (Please see the above ACHIEVEMENT AT A GLANCE.)
