Progress report for
Norway launching Global Action Network on Sustainable Food from the Ocean for Food Security and Nutrition
Achievement at a glance
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed 2016 to 2025 to be the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (“Nutrition Decade”). Sustainable, resilient food systems for healthy diets is one of six action areas recognized. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture provides healthy aquatic foods and aquatic food systems plays an important role for food security and nutrition. However aquatic foods are often missing in debates, documents and strategies on food security and nutrition. The Global Action Network initiative on Sustainable Food from the Oceans and Inland Waters, was launched at the Oceans conference 6. June 2017 as the first action network to be established under the Nutrition Decade. The Global Action Network will mobilize actions to include aquatic food as a key food source for achieving food security and improved nutrition in the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025), and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. This informal network will provide a platform for countries, to link and learn to generate sufficient, safe and nutritious aquatic foods, which meets dietary needs and food preferences, leaving no one behind. The Global Action network has arranged 6 meetings so far. Information about them are available at the network web page. In addition, the Global Action Network has arranged side events in support of its mission, and supported relevant events arranged by network participants. As a result of the meetings so far, a Concept document, a Mission statement, and an Action Plan are developed. A Gain and Share-tool which identifies challenges, knowledge and possible solutions is developed to share important information on the key elements of food security. Activities in the Global Action Network are shared on its web page. https://nettsteder.regjeringen.no/foodfromtheocean/
