Achievement at a glance
The project was approved by the Department of the Environment and received the assignment of use of the area for the construction of the recycling shed by the Department of Infrastructure and Buildings of the Municipality of Santos. The area allocated to the project is 1500 m and awaits the removal of construction waste that remains on the land after the transfer of families that occupied the permanent preservation area to a housing development. Coca-Cola FEMSA Brasil has already been purchasing PET plastic from mangroves, beaches and rocky shores by volunteers from the EcoFaxina Institute, expressing interest in sponsoring the project, as well as other large companies related to the food and beverage sector.Challenges faced in implementation
The process of obtaining the assignment of use of the area with the Santos City Hall involved the transfer of 200 families that occupied the permanent preservation area. Many families did not want to move and the Public Prosecutor's Office acted to make the area unoccupied, making the process slower than originally planned.Beneficiaries
It consists of the construction of a shed on the banks of the estuary that will work as an Operational Base for the work of cleaning and recovering degraded mangrove areas, to be carried out by a work front composed of young men and women living on stilts, who will be trained as Environmental Waste Collection Agents , professionals responsible for cleaning and environmental education work in the Santos and So Vicente estuary.
At the Operational Base, the waste will be weighed and will undergo manual sorting, where all recyclable material is separated by a female team, in order to obtain a material that can be recycled. The waste will be collected by the urban cleaning company, which will dispose of it in a landfill. The installation of the shed will also bring immediate benefits to the residents of the region, who will have a Voluntary Delivery Point for Recyclable Materials (ENP).
More than collecting and sorting waste, the Environmental Agents who will work in the shed will be educators and multipliers of environmental awareness within their communities, where they should encourage other residents to separate the waste and dispose of it correctly, promoting changes in habits in families.
