Progress report for
HYBRIT - Towards fossilfree steel
Achievement at a glance
In 2018 the ground was broken for the world-unique pilot plant for fossil free steel to be built on the SSAB site in Lule. The pilot plant, which is a part of the Hybrit-initiative by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, will be ready in the summer of 2020. The lessons learned from the pilot will form the basis for a demonstration plant, which will be in place in 2025. There, iron will be produced under the same conditions as in a full-scale plant, but with limited capacity. The goal is to deliver fossil-free steel to the market in 2026. Using this technique Sweden can reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by ten percent and Finland by seven percent.Beneficiaries
