Progress report for
Raise Awareness about the Ocean and Take Action
Achievement at a glance
Every year, we conduct two types of activities to celebrate World Ocean Day (8 June)1. An international youth contest focused on the UN WOD motto for the year in question
2. Events - whenever possible with partners - on three continents on or around the date
The programme in 2019 was focused on gender - women and ocean.
An international jury [https://www.mundusmaris.org/index.php/en/projects/proj2019/2223-jury-en] chose the winners. Their contributions are displayed in a digital museum [https://www.mundusmaris.org/index.php/en/projects/proj2019/2239-19awards-en].
As for the events, they involved information booths at festivals, beach cleanings, more academically oriented events, community commitments and more. They took place in nine locations in five countries on three continents [https://www.mundusmaris.org/index.php/en/projects/proj2019/2236-wod2019-en]
Challenges faced in implementation
One of the biggest challenges is to develop greater continuity of action, particularly in relation to schools and young people. We are therefore developing the format of the youth 'contest' towards upfront support to interested schools in several countries and languages in order to enhance institutionally supported engagement with the ocean. The intention is to produce a combined expression of the diversity of novel ways in which we can protect the ocean (UN motto this year is "Innovation for a sustainable ocean").Beneficiaries
Schools, their teachers and pupils in several countries as far as the youth 'contest' is concerned.
Direct beneficiaries vary according to the nature of the event organised in each place/country, ranging from general public to specific youth groups, including students.
