Joint Roadmap to accelerate Marine/Maritime Spatial Planning worldwide
Achievement at a glance
The MSPglobal Initiative co-funded by the European Commission (EMFF) started in November 2018 and was launched in February 2019 with the participation of more than 100 participants from 59 different countries.Studies on MSP and Blue Growth were published providing information on how MSP can help coastal states to foster the potential for a Sustainable Blue Economy. The MSP for Blue Growth Conference in Brussels (Belgium) in October 2017 served to share practices on how MSP can lead to certainty and sustainability of our ocean economies and facilitate cross-sector integration.
Both training for planners around the world and the specific pilots to build capacity building on MSP linked with the local communities of the pilot case study of the MSPglobal project in the Southeast Pacific.Trainings and seminars have been jointly organized by the IOC and European Commission in the context of the Joint Roadmap in Marrakech (Morocco), Nairobi (Kenya), Hanoi (Viet Nam), Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Zagreb (Croatia), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Lima (Peru), Panama City (Panama), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), Rome (Italy), Madrid (Spain), Guayaquil (Ecuador), Libreville (Gabon), Rabat (Morocco) and So Paulo (Brazil). Dedicated sessions on marine spatial planning and blue economy were also organized during the European Maritime Day in Lisbon (Portugal) in May 2019. The Governments of the Netherlands, Sweden, Turkmenistan, Argentina, Viet Nam, the PAP/RAC, CPPS and the GEF provided support to the Joint Roadmap.
The European Commission and IOC-UNESCO organized together four international MSPforum in Brussels (Belgium) in May 2018, in March 2019 on the island of La Runion (France) and the third in Vigo (Spain) in May 2019. The MSPforum: Global Meets Regional was organized in November 2019 in Riga (Latvia) as a joint event with the 3rd Baltic MSPforum.
Beneficiaries
Beneficiaries were national and local governmental officials, high-level experts from key research institutions, representatives of the private sector and the civil society. The activities in the context of this OceanAction facilitated the interaction amongst different stakeholders at national and regional level. The activities promoted the exchange of lessons learnt and practical examples to enhance ocean governance in line with the needs of our Member States and the sustainable development goals of Agenda 2030. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nTraining activities were implemented in 20 different countries and the training materials are available in 4 different languages (Spanish, French, English and Portuguese). More than 3,000 national officials and experts from 98 different countries benefited from both face-to-face and online trainings. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nThe European Commission (MARE) and IOC-UNESCO jointly organized with national and regional partners four workshops of the International Forum on Marine Spatial Planning (MSPforum) in Brussels (BE) in 2018 and in La Reunion (FR), Vigo (ES) and Riga (LV) in 2019, with more than 1200 participants as part of the priority actions agreed in the context of the Joint Roadmap to accelerate marine spatial planning processes worldwide.
