Progress report for
Protecting fisheries livelihoods in Ghana and Somalia
Achievement at a glance
In Ghana, the EU supports two projects implemented by 1) the Environmental Justice Foundation / Hen Mpoano (https://ejfoundation.org/what-we-do/oceans/ghana and https://www.facebook.com/farbando/) and 2) CARE/Friends of the Nation/OXFAM. The two contracts were signed in 2016 and activities started in 2017. The projects are to contribute to sustainable fisheries resources management and increase stakeholder participation in the management of the resources using the UN-FAO VGGT principles. Both projects are entering the third year of implementation and results so far have been encouraging in terms of their added value to support smallholder fishers in fisheries management, and also to government as partners for the management of the resource. In Somalia, the EU has been supporting Fairfishing (https://fairfishing.org/2016-2018/ ) since 2016. In 2018, July-September, five new facilities were inaugurated, two coastal fishery stations in Laasqorey and Garacaad, and three in-land markets in Burco, Galkayo and Qardho. Until now, FairFishing has employed 40 local people to manage the program and the new facilities. These facilities will increase income possibilities in the value chain, as it has been the case in Berbera.
