Progress report for
Conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the Carribean Sea Basin
Achievement at a glance
The call for proposals targeted natural areas that are threatened by misuse, overexploitation, pollution and climate change effects, while favouring actions in the field that directly benefit ecosystems-dependent communities and actions that enable stakeholders participation, empowerment, awareness raising and good governance.Eight grant projects are under implementation, covering both priorities: (1) conservation/restoration of vulnerable ecosystems with focus on marine protected areas; (2) sustainable livelihoods and food security in ecosystem-dependent coastal communities through biodiversity-friendly income-generating activities and by reducing overfishing, destructive fishing practices, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as coastal degradation and overexploitation due to tourism and recreational use.
Beneficiaries
The grant beneficiaries can be socio-professional corporations (such as fishery cooperatives/fishermen organisations, seafood or mangrove products harvesters, tourism promotion agencies); Civil Society Organizations; Municipalities and local authorities; Sub-regional and regional institutions and decision makers responsible for coordinating and facilitating national-level conservation action and for harmonizing management approaches across the sub-regions; National biodiversity and environmental authorities, including in particular protected area agencies, and decision makers responsible for overseeing protected area conservation and management action.
