Participatory education, hands-on training, technical assistance - capacity building- is key to change and desired solutions that improve quality of life and wellbeing for small-scale farmers and their communities.The StateWide Small Farm Program, an active participatory capacity building program, provided participatory education, hands-on training, and technical assistance with small-scale farmers and their communities in the areas of alternative agriculture systems-organic farming systems, alternative market development, sustainable organic food systems, and sustainable living to encourage all participants toward improving quality of life and well-being, and to enable a thriving sustainability for local and global underserved farming populations, today and future.
Challenges faced in implementation
Participatory engagement supported and enabled conversations - dialogs that led to strategies toward building and strengthening the thriving development of small-scale farmers and their communities: StateWide Small Farm Program relevant participatory education, hands-on training, technical assistance, etc. in organic farming systems; developed linkages for new dialogs and new-collaborations/partnerships that provided an opportunity for key leader-stakeholders to hear and understand the barriers for underserved farming populations and possible solutions; participatory learning focused on strategies and practices to support clean non-toxic environments, healthy soils, healthy local nutritious foods for today's and future communities.Beneficiaries

Actions
StateWide Small Farm Program worked together to provide relevant participatory education, hands-on training, technical assistance and new-collaborations and partnerships to enhance sustainability of small-scale farmers and their communities, local good clean production and access, education and training/capacity building for our local and global communities on the benefits of regenerative-organic farming systems.StateWide Small Farm Program worked to support organic farming systems- agroecology (sustainable agriculture productivity, resilient agriculture, seed saving, participatory extension/agricultural research), healthy resilient-nutritious local and global food systems; Implemented alternative markets that provided access to local year-round nutrient rich fresh foods- direct from local small-scale farmers; and Enhanced food security and community education to support local seasonal foods direct from small-scale farmers: Towards enabling well-being, ending hunger, providing access for all - and enabling a thriving sustainable development.
