Progress report for
Curacao, in collaboration with the WAITT Institute, will develop and codify a sustainable ocean policy by December 2018
Achievement at a glance
We are currently in the process of implementing policy and developing legislation for the ecological aspects of ocean management. To this end we are being supported by the Waitt Institute who has done several scoping studies in 2015 and 2016. From these scoping studies a policy plan for sustainable ocean management has been drafted and presented to the Minister of Health, Nature and Environment. This document has been adopted by the Council of Ministers as the roadmap to sustainable ocean management and is now being executed.<br> A marine protected area based on the SPAW protocol (Cartagena Convention) has already been delivered. We are in the process of establishing Fish Reproductive Zones (No Fishing Zones), which are in the final stage of adoption. Furthermore we have started working on a proposal for seawater quality monitoring and the implementation of marine spatial planning in order to achieve 30% protection of our seas. The adoption of mammal and shark sanctuaries is also on the agenda for 2019.
