Progress report for
Implementation of a regional network of stock assessment for pelagic and demersal resources to promote sustainable fisheries under an ecosystem approach
Achievement at a glance
United Nations has been implementing Sustainable Development Goal No. 14 and its component Indicator 14.4.1, which determines the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels. IMARPE participated in the Expert Workshop on "Best Practices for the Preparation and Reporting of the SDG Indicator 14.4.1", which took place at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, in November 21 - 24, 2017.
In the framework of activities on the status of fish stocks worldwide, the Office of Marine and Continental Fisheries, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, invited IMARPE to participate in the Expert Workshop on "Global Assessment of the state of fish stocks ", which took place at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy in February, 04 06, 2019. The objectives of this Workshop were to review the technical design, strength and practical applicability of new methodologies for evaluating fish stocks, and design a plan to move towards their application in the global assessment.
At the regional level, since 2018, Imarpe integrates a Network of Fisheries Research Institutes of the so-called Pacific Alliance, conformed by Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru. Among the activities already implemented in the framework of this network, is the joint participation in the acoustic assessment surveys carried out by each country, in order to standardize knowledge and methodologies in the assessment; integrating the ecosystem approach at the regional level.

Challenges faced in implementation
A great challenge was to achieve an adequate regional framework that would allow the integrated work of the different research institutes in issues of stock assessment of pelagic and demersal fish. In this sense, the conformation of the Pacific Alliance was fundamental for the development of this commitment.
Search for funding sources to ensure travel and stay of the participating scientific people.
