Progress report for
Peruvian Coastal Atlas
Achievement at a glance
The Marine and Coastal Research Office has been implementing the project "Implementation of the Coastal Marine Atlas of Peru" with information from IMARPE. This project seeks to provide biological-fishing, oceanographic and environmental quality information of the coastal area through interactive maps, on the institutional website.\r\nDuring 2018 and 2019 the information has been updated in the atlas with the data collected from the last field trips carried out by the office. \r\nThe ArcGIS Online application has been purchased, with which version 2 of the atlas is being developed. The data processed and displayed in the Atlas are found by parameters and year of sampling. The data is stored in a computer of the Functional Area of Coastal Marine Research (AFIMC), in a geographic database. With this data we already have a test viewer with the updated information in the link: http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?url=http%3A%2F%2Fafimc%3A6080%2Farcgis%2Frest%2Fservices%2FATLAS_AFIMC%2FMapServer&source=sdChallenges faced in implementation
It was difficult to acquire commercial software to develop web mapping applications and the financing of the online services is expensive. We are planning to use open source software in the future. \r\nAnother challenge was to agree which data could be uploaded in the Atlas and the graphical representation of it.Beneficiaries
The Institute of the Sea of Peru is the Government Agency in charge of the investigation of the marine environment with the most abundant and diverse information of the Peruvian sea and its resources, the systematization of data and dissemination of this information would be of great importance in the development of the country.\r\nThe purpose of this project is the collection, systematization and integration of the information generated by the different areas of the Institute of the Sea of Peru, for the elaboration of a Digital Atlas distributed via the Internet and that can be used as a tool for decision making in the use of marine resources and in the ordering of coastal marine space and the ordering of its activities. As beneficiaries we consider decision makers at the different levels of the Government, from the national agencies to the local authorities.
