Progress report for
BKT Tomorrow Water Project
Achievement at a glance
1. In last October, BKT was selected as the best company for two consecutive years in the 2018 UN Sustainable Development Goals Business Index (SDGBI). At the UN HLPF Korea Ceremony held in February, BKT also received the SDGs implementation awards for corporations.2. From April to December, BKT conducted a feasibility study on sludge resource development project using COWT and BEAD technology in Hanoi, Vietnam. Compared with existing incineration facilities, BKT technology is competitive in terms of investment and maintenance costs.
3. BKT evaluated a technical performance for dairy wastes that contain highly concentrated nitrogen in Indiana, USA. The evaluation showed up to 87% of nitrogen removal efficiency and confirmed the processability of high nitrogenous wastewater.
Challenges faced in implementation
Currently, TWP implementation requires a technical stabilization for each process. TWP's core process, oxygenic photo granule (OPG) can reduce aeration energy consumed in sewage treatment by using the oxygen, byproducts of algae photosynthesis, for the decomposition of nitrogen or organic matter.BKT is co-working on technology development with Professor Park, Chul of the University of Massachusetts, OPG's original technology developer. The company is also going to conduct the performance verification on pilot sites based on the joint research and internal experiment.

Actions
BKT succeeded in the commercialization of high-density AMX for the first time in Korea as the AMX process was selected for sidestream of Noksan sewage treatment plant. AMX has been installed in large fermenters in Gangbyeon sewage treatment plant to operate the AMX process in the Noksan. A test run will start in August 2019 and construction part will be completed in April 2020.AMX technology for the municipal sidestream of Noksan is expected to reduce processing costs by 83% and increase denitrification rates by 82% compared to the conventional process.
