Partnership for Regional Ocean Governance: International Forum for Advancing Regional Ocean Governance
Achievement at a glance
To fulfill the commitment, the Government of Germany with the support of the European Commission launched the Marine Regions Forum project together with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), and TMG Think Tank for Sustainability as the main implementing partners in November 2017. An international high-level expert workshop was held from 8 to 9 October 2018 at the IASS in Potsdam, Germany, to further develop the concept of the Marine Regions Forum together with renowned international ocean experts, many of which are part of the Advisory Board and Steering Group of the Marine Regions Forum. Drawing on discussions at the expert workshop, the concept was revised and the themes and session topics for the first Marine Regions Forum, to be held from 30 September to 2 October 2019 in Berlin, Germany, were further narrowed down. The Marine Regions Forum 2019 will be run under the overarching theme Achieving a healthy ocean Regional ocean governance beyond 2020. The following three conference themes have been selected to structure the discussions at the Marine Regions Forum 2019: 1) Achieving SDG 14; 2) Underpinning global processes; and 3) Knowledge for ocean action.Next Steps
The Marine Regions Forum 2019 will be held from 30 September to 2 October 2019 in Berlin, Germany under the overarching theme “Achieving a healthy ocean – Regional ocean governance beyond 2020”. 150 participants from science, civil society, the private sector, governments, regional and international organizations will be invited to join the Marine Regions Forum 2019. Participation will be on invitation in consideration of a regional and sectoral balance, expertise and expected contributions to session topics and plenaries.\r\nThe Marine Regions Forum 2019 aims to generate new knowledge and solutions in regional ocean governance. By offering an informal space for dialogue and co-designing of solutions, the Marine Regions Forum enables the development of new frameworks, concepts and cross-sectoral partnerships at the regional level. This exchange will be facilitated through an engaging and collaborative conference format, including interactive plenary sessions and innovative formats for working group sessions. \r\nThe Marine Regions Forum 2019 will provide an opportunity to support the implementation of SDG 14 and help shape a post-2020/2030 pathway for healthy oceans. The outcomes of the conference will be fed back into formal processes at regional and global scales.Beneficiaries
