Achievement at a glance
3.The implementation of our capacity-building leadership program for 16 partner fishing cooperatives which we work with, and their strengthening for human development, common wellbeing, communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation. This includes the development and consolidation of the project Gender Equality at Sea, in order to achieve gender equality in the decision-making process for marine preservation and fishery management.We have had two generations in our leadership program. The 2013-2016 had as thematic axis the common good. In this program, three communities participated, 15 leaders of whom 11 were men and four women.
In the second edition of the community leadership program, the focus was on gender equality. The program strengthened 15 (11 women y four men) fishing leaders working on sustainable fisheries and marine conservation from 12 communities. Several topics were included such as ocean health, legal framework for fishing, collaborative negotiation, public policies, and gender perspective as transversal topic across the workshops. Women contributions across the value chain of three fisheries were estimated. red lobster, penshell and Caribbean lobster.
Challenges faced in implementation
The most significate challenge is the reticence of some fishers and cooperatives to change their paradigms, which are rooted in deep patriarchal ideologies.Beneficiaries
