Progress report for
Mainstreaming ocean conservation and sustainable fisheries in Mexico through effective participation and citizen science.
Achievement at a glance
Seven-no take marine reserves have been decreed as fish refugia since we made our voluntary commitment. These reserves have been created in the Pacific Ocean (two reserves, 2.0 km2), Gulf of California (four reserves, 2.2 km2) and Caribbean (one reserve, 0.08 km2). Each reserve was promoted by fishers through a bottom-up process. Additionally, 10 reserves covering 136.3 km2 of no-take were renewed for five years more, at the request of the local fishers in the Caribbean. We have also finished creating biophysical design principles for creating effective marine reserves in three Mexico's main coastal ecosystems: coral reefs, kelp forests, and rocky reefs.Challenges faced in implementation
1. Lack of coordination within government agencies caused delays at the implementation of the no-take zones(marine reserves).2. Election season and the change of executive administration, due changes in political commitments.
Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries have been small-scale fishers.
