Progress report for
Raise Awareness about the Ocean and Take Action
Achievement at a glance
We organised similar activities for World Oceans Day 2018 as the year before with events on three continents: in Argentina, Belgium, Cameroon, Nigeria and Senegal. https://www.mundusmaris.org/index.php/en/projects/2018/2050-wod2018-en\r\nThis year we were blessed with a particularly high turn out and participation, particularly in Belgium and Cameroon. Quite a number of new volunteers and helpers joined in Brussels allowing for several follow-up activities lateron in the year to reach out to more citizens on different aspects of the SDGs, including climate and public health.\r\nWe also invited young people again to engage for the ocean through a youth contest in three age groups: up to 12 years, from 3 to 18 years and from 19 to 14 years of age. The winners were selected by an international jury and honoured publicly: https://www.mundusmaris.org/index.php/en/projects/2018/2044-awards-en\r\nAs this year\'s motto was focused on reducing plastic pollution of the ocean and its ecosystems, we organised several beach clean ups and participated in those organised by other organisations.Challenges faced in implementation
As a non-profit relying on committed volunteers and donations, organising these international and national activities always represent major challenges. However, the good turn out and participation is highly motivating and allowed for an increase in quantity and quality of work for the ocean beyond World Oceans Day.Beneficiaries
1. young people around the globe engaging with our youth contest and thus learn about the ocean.\r\n2. schools and young people at least in Argentina, Cameroon, Nigeria and Senegal, where local activities are tailor-made for young people\r\n3. ordinary citizens in Brussels reached in the hundreds during the World Oceans Day information and awareness drive and during the Sunday without Cars.
