Progress report for
Achievement at a glance
This commitment consisted in training teachers at the Escuela Modelo in late 2017 and having a green classroom and center of separation fully functional by end of 2018. Unfortunately, we were not able to hold this training in 2017, instead we received funding from MARFUND in 2018 and were able to continue with this commitment.\r\nIn October 2018, the training for the teachers by specialist, MSc Monica Alba; Bachelor in Biology with a Master\'s degree in Environmental Education, resides in Cancun, Mexico, since 2006. She is currently engaged in the design, generation of content, materials and evaluation of environmental education and training projects collaborating with national and international public and private organizations; and of the social sector. She has held public positions in the field of environmental education in the Municipalities of Solidaridad and Benito Jurez in Quintana Roo. She teaches at the University of the Caribbean in the Faculty of Sustainable Tourism and belongs to the 2014 generation of the Leadership Program in the Mesoamerican Reef System specialized in Sustainable Materials Management (http://liderazgosam.org/). Since 2011, she has the RAU registry of the Secretariat of Environment of Quintana Roo for the elaboration of Urban Solid Waste Management Plans and Special Management. She holds the TEDxCancn Event License (https://www.ted.com/tedx/events/18459); was held at the Modelo school. Participation included teachers, student council and cafeteria managers.\r\nIn addition, we held the training with the Santos Guardiola Institute in Coxen Hole; as well as a training aimed towards the Hotel Sector and local authorities (municipal representatives, local community boards, water boards and the comanagers to the Bay Islands National Marine Park); all on solid waste management plans.\r\n\r\nEnd of 2017 we had some infrastructure issues at the Green Classroom in the Modelo School. A mud slide broke the windows and we had to move everything out until there were funds available to do the proper repairs. Unfortunately, this did not happen as fast as we would have liked. \r\nIn July 2018, the wall that was broken by the mud slide was fixed and the work began again in the green classroom. Rains began again in October 2018 and we have noticed that there is water penetrating on another wall; we are in the process of getting this wall sealed. \r\nFrom November to February we plan on working in the Green Classroom, accommodating it so everyone at the Modelo School can benefit from it, in addition to being an example for all other schools. In early February when classes are resumed we plan on continuing our work with teachers and students in the separation of garbage at the school and have the separation center fully functioning. \r\n\r\nTo date we have been able to:\r\n1. Implement training for teachers on management plans of solid waste\r\n2. Implement training for hotels on management plans of solid waste\r\n3. Implement training for local authorities on management plans of solid waste\r\n4. Include an article on the contract with the cafeteria and school that obligates the cafeteria to separate solid and organic waste. As well as no use single use plastics.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
