Progress report for
Ocean futures: solutions from science
Achievement at a glance
The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) was developed in 2012 by scientists seeing the necessity for international collaboration on global observation of ocean acidification as well as capacity building. GOA-ON is a collaborative international approach to document the status and progress of ocean acidification in open-ocean, coastal, and estuarine environments, and to understand the drivers and impacts of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems. By 2018 take up has been extraordinary, now comprising a network of 445 scientists from 77 countries. There are 5 regional GOA-ON hubs and the UK is host of the latest North East Atlantic GOA-ON hub based at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, funded by the UK Government.Ocean acidification knowledge exchange: Plymouth Marine Laboratory continues its long term commitment to communicating the issues of ocean acidification and other climate related stressors to policy makers in the UK and internationally, including at the UNFCCC COP and in 2018 it did so at the Commonwealth Heads of State meeting associated marine science event in the UK.
