Support to the Government on Marine and Coastal Resource Management and Sustainable Livelihoods in Northern Sri Lanka
Achievement at a glance
IUCN commissioned a land and marine resource characterization study to document the natural (land and marine) resources of the Northern Islands. These islands are to be developed in the future for tourism and settlements. The study teams (land team and marine team) spend over 20 days going from Island to Island and comprised of staff from IUCN, Marine Environment Protection Agency, Sri Lanka Tourism (Planning Division); Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department; and Central Environment Authority and the study was conducted with the support of Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the Provincial Ministry in charge of the subject of Environment.<br>

<br>Field data collection and draft report writing is completed. The report on the natural resources of the islands in the Northern Province is undergoing final edits (September 07, 2018).

<br>With regard to the capacity buliding, IUCN helped the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Wildlife to build the capacity of the Marine unit of the Dept. of Wildlife Conservation related to awarness education, marine investigations skills and provided inputs to the strategy and action plans of the Marine Unit.

<br>Training materials to conduct Masters and Diploma courses have been developed and ready to be adopted by the Sri Lanka universities. Disccussion are underway with University of Ruhuna, Ocean University, University of Colombo and University of Jaffna on the modalities of adopting the training material developed based on the Intergrated Coastal Zone Management (ICM) traning conducted at Asian Instutue of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand.
