Progress report for
Restore the Mesoamerican Coral Reef
Achievement at a glance
Un Voto = Un Coral was a political campaign designed in 2016, for the actual Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin. For each vote, that the then candidate received, a coral colony will be planted, . Once elected with 280,000 vote, we aided the governor`s team on designing and presenting the MCBR Restoration Program (Programa de Restauracin del SAM).As Public Policy goes, we helped elaborate Senator Beristains Point of Agreement (Punto de Acuerdo) during the forum of innovation (Foro en el Senado de la Republica) based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda and how coral reefs and their ecosystems play a vital role in human life. The Agreement stated the following:
"The Senate of the Mexican Republic, respectfully exhorts the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), so that in coordination with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, academics and civil society, contribute to the restoration and preservation of the Mesoamerican reef, by implementing innovative strategies, in favor of the protection and restoration of what is our natural heritage: our sea".
And in March of this year, during the anniversary of the MCBR, SEMARNAT announced a touristic photo competition, where the two winners were awarded with the opportunity to plant baby coral in Cozumel.
Finally, during this years presidential elections in Mexico, we were honored with the opportunity of presenting our work on Ocean Conservancy and Marine Environment to the different candidates. We are proud to say, that today, our work is part of the elected president Andres Manuel Lopez Obradors Environmental Agenda.
