Marine debris clean-up drive at Kovalam - A community participation\r\n\r\nKovalam stand apart with its unique feature of seabed composed of wide spread near inshore rocky reefs which extend up to seven kilometers. These rocky reefs accommodate flourishing mussel colonies which the local fishermen depends on. During the monsoon season nearby estuaries break up and the estuarine mouth opens up which dump all the urban wastes in the near inshore reefs and thus affects the livelihood of indigenous fishing community. \r\nIn this context FML conducted Marine debris clean-up program at Kovalam and our team of SCUBA divers collected 75 Kg of debris within an hour. \r\nAim of the drive:\r\n To raise awareness among the public about how throwing out tradition affects the ocean health and thereby associated fishers livelihood. \r\n To alarm the policy makers to attract their attention towards this issue.\r\n To drag the attention of Medias towards importance of ocean conservation and ocean literacy. \r\n\r\n
