Progress report for
POSCO Steel Village SDGs Initiative
Achievement at a glance
Through the POSCO Steel Village Initiative, POSCO is carrying out various social contribution projects around the world. In January 2018, POSCO completed and donated the steel dome in Rayong, Thailand. The steel dome construction began in December last year with the fund raised by the POSCO 1% Foundation with POSCO-South Asia. This project is to donate a variety of dome stadiums to three schools in Rayong, Thailand, where POSCO's on-site corporate body-POSCO-South Asia, POSCO-TCS, and POSCO Thainox-are located.
The steel dome, 12m in width, 30m in length, and 8m in height, is constructed with POSCO-TCS and PT. Krakatau POSCO's steel products and can accommodate more than 100 people at the same time. Considering the frequent tropical squalls and high solar radiation, it is built to enable local students to enjoy outdoor activities safely.
In addition to Southeast Asia, POSCO has built 39 steel houses in 20 Korean cities, donating to low-income and fire-damaged families, and ultimately aims to build the 50th steel house in 2018.
In particular, POSCO Steel Village Project was introduced to the United Nations 51st session of the Commission on Population and Development in April 2018 at the United Nations New York Headquarters and was adopted as a written statement to the Commission. This has resulted with the evaluation that the project plays a major role in solving the housing problem caused by large-scale migrations of youth and elderly to the urban areas of developing countries to seek for jobs.
The POSCO Steel Village Initiative will be expanded worldwide by 2030.
Beneficiaries
There are three common causes for different types of human mobility: economic difficulty, social and political change, and demographic change. Recently, large scale of human mobility such as migration within and between countries has been taking place due to urbanization and other external reasons. However, people still face great difficulties and challenges in new areas they move to. They cannot easily fuse into new and different society and are often hampered by a variety of restrictions on their activities.
Above all, the greatest hardship is the lack of sustainable residential space to settle down. Those who cannot get decent quality residential area are likely to become homeless or poor residential dwellers. Furthermore, they can be a main factor in rapidly aggravating the urban population and degenerating unban economic growth as mega-cities in Europe and Southeast Asia have limited financial resources to accommodate the population living there.
Therefore, finding area with insufficient housing and building quality residential houses through POSCO Steel Village will not only benefit those migrants in search for sustainable residential area, but also general residents affected by the unban economic activity.
