2018 Deliverable completed:
Water action for the ocean high-level panel at World Water Forum 8 sets direction for sustainable management from source to sea

The 8th World Water Forum was a very strategic event for the S2S Platform in its ambition to influence the policy agendas of major freshwater actors, to take actions for the ocean. The main event was a high-level panel, convened by the S2S Platform, with Ministers from Peru, Senegal and Bulgaria, as well as top level representatives from SUEZ, the GEF and the Brazilian ministry of environment (replacing the minister).
Hon Elsa Galarza Contreras, Minister of Environment, Peru noted the challenges when sectoral financial mechanisms make it difficult for governments to apply a truly integrated approach. A perspective welcomed by Dr Gustavo Fonseca, Director of Programs at the Global Environment Facility: If countries demand support for coordination and dialogue between sectors, financing will have to follow.

Mr Peter Thomson, UN Special Envoy for the Ocean, was also a panelist and came with a strong message on the interconnectedness of the SDGs: everything we do on land has implications for the sea and everything we do at sea affects our lives on land.
The S2S Platform was also part of the session coordination group, and were represented in the panel, in the thematic session entitled Emerging policy solutions for water quality management from ridge to reef; and organized one of their biannual partners meetings. ,
In addition, the S2S Platform facilitated the inclusion of events under the thematic and regional processes of the World Water Forum program, organized by our partners including ICIMOD and FAO.
An important milestone was also that the Ministerial Declaration of the World Water Forum for the first time mentioned the source-to-sea perspective.
