Progress report for
Achievement at a glance
Our Massive Open Online Course, broadcast for the second time between April and June 2017, was attended by over 2500 registered participants from 62 countries. Participants were students, educators, people working governmental and non-governmental organisations, practitioners of ocean management, conservation and awareness, and interested citizens from around the globe. Once again the MOOC was the site of discussion on ocean matters relating to the function of ocean systems, the influence of humans, and the possibilities for better, more sustainable ocean use. Participants shared comments, experiences and interacted in the forum, accompanied by a group of sic MOOC Scouts, who accompanied the course. Weekly topics included Ocean Sustainability, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Coasts, Marine Life and Minerals, Marine Ecosystems, and Ocean and Climate. International experts joined in the I've Q&A sessions, as enthusiastic with the engagement as we were. All materials are open source and available at oceanmooc.org. We are now gearing up for our OceanMOOC 2018! The MOOC is a joint effort of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" at Kiel University, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the International Ocean Institute, Malta and the SDG Academy, Columbia University, NY.
