Progress report for
Achievement at a glance
Key achievements in 2017: Official launch of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) on 15 May 2017. - Collaboration frameworks: (a) Collaboration with EUMETNET (network of 31 European National Meteorological Services) resulting in funding for dedicated radiosonde launches and additional buoy deployments (coop. with AARI - Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute) for the Arctic Special Observing Periods; (b) Extension of YOPP endorsement process to institutional endorsement. - Modelling and forecasting: (a) Finalization of a YOPP Modelling Plan (version 1) that summarizes planned activities, defines experimental settings and common model output, and provides recommendations; (b) Initiation, development, and ongoing maintenance of the community effort Sea Ice Drift Forecast Experiment (SIDFEx; 2017-2020). - Documents and publications: (a) Key publication: Casati et al. Verification of Environmental Prediction in Polar Regions: Recommendations for the Year of Polar Prediction; (b) Finalization of document Navigating Weather, Water, Ice and Climate Information for Safe Polar Mobilities by PPP-SERA Task Team (Polar Prediction Project, Societal and Economic Research and Applications), to be published soon. - Online tools: (a) Development of a YOPP Explorer to provide an interactive overview of YOPP-endorsed projects; (b) Development of a Google Earth layer to provide an interactive overview on what observational activities will take place during the Special Observing Periods; (c) Development, launch, and maintenance of Polar Prediction Matters an online format that fosters the dialogue between forecast users and forecast providers; (d) Establishment of effective communication tools including a website, a Twitter account, and a mailing list (in 2017 more than 500 subscribers). - Events: (a) Advancement of the work of the YOPP Task Teams on the Southern Hemisphere and Airborne Missions, (b) Co-organization of the 8th international verification workshop (Berlin 2017) and associated verification challenge, where polar-specific verification metrics were among the winning metrics; (c) First YOPP Online Conference held on 17 October 2017.
