Achievement at a glance
The following are highlights of new initiatives undertaken by OTN and its partners globally towards increasing scientific knowledge, developing research capacity and transferring marine technology : OTN has acquired new robotic ocean gliders, which will aid in oceanographic, and active and passive animal monitoring activities principally in the Northwest Atlantic (NWA); OTN data managers have certified national and international telemetry partners in the operation of the OTN Data Node and associated software towards global interoperability and collaboration; several new collaborations have begun between OTN Canadian government research scientists towards studying shark population dynamics, developing sustainable management of future fisheries including northern cod, and identifying distribution of marine sponges; OTN is now working with partners in Mozambique identifying behaviour of bull sharks and investigating human-shark interactions; a conservation financing campaign launched co-led by OTN is supporting rescue and response efforts for distressed and beached cetaceans in the NWA as well as shark conservation and research in West Africa; OTN and collaborators in the Gulf of Mexico are investigating fishing pressures among other dynamics of several key species of fish in a new study.
