Global Wastewater Initiative (GW2I)
Achievement at a glance
The Global Wastewater Initiative over the past few years overseen a diverse and plentiful array of activities implemented that seek to make a definitive impact on the way wastewater is viewed and prioritized around the world. This includes, collaborating with partners to contribute to reduction of pollution into the marine environment ( Georgia, PERSGA region); Knowledge generation involving partners, this includes development of the MOOC on wastewater and nutrient management, most recent reports being world Water Development Report 2017, Harnessing opportunity in Wastewater Management, Training manual on monitoring impact of wastewater on coral reefs. The Caribbean regional platform of the partnership established in October 2016; Various GW2I fora held on sustainable wastewater management (World Water Day, World Water Weeks, Dresden Nexus Conference, IWA water symposiums, Istanbul International Water Forum)Challenges faced in implementation
The main challenge has been lack of sufficient funds to realize all the objectives set.Next Steps
-Developing a future work plan for the next five years that will focus on awareness raising activities such as campaigns, engaging the youth etc. building up on the already generated knowledge over the years (the partnership is reviewed every 5 years by an Intergovernmental Meeting)\r\n-Government participation and collaboration will continue to be emphasized in order to maximize the potential impacts of GW2I activities at scale. \r\n-The GW2I will also seek to contribute towards increasing awareness and strengthening capacity among users globally on wastewater management by joining forces with organizations strategically placed in major regions creating regional hubs for the GW2I\r\nBeneficiaries
