Progress report for
Youth Involvement in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
Achievement at a glance
All outcomes were delivered and the Ranney high school students highly benefited from the collaboration with the Monmouth University Faculty, in obtaining a greater awareness of the issues involved in the realization of the SDG’s, and getting involved in the implementation of the solutions they proposed. Students learned how current issues relative to SDG’s are debated at the UN, by attending two meetings focusing on youth empowerment and leadership to support the UN action plan, and their involvement in the realization of the SDG’s. Students developed a paper and a .ppt presentation, which will be expanded in a larger project.Challenges faced in implementation
I invited a speaker from the UN to talk at Monmouth University for the MU students and the Ranney students, but we were not contacted back. I will resend my request for a speaker for September. This is the only deliverable not completed.Next Steps
The initiative was planned until June 2016, but we decided to continue to work during next year (July 2016-July 2017): the students would like to turn their research and proposed solutions into an action plan, and into an applied project, in the form of a factual engagement at an international level, for the implementation of the solution to the issues addressed by the SDG of their choice. Also, a collaboration will be extended to international high schools from Rome, Italy. Ranney students would then have the possibility to interact with high schools from other countries to develop more global solutions to problems relative to SDGs. Ranney students will attend more meetings on SDG’s at the UN Headquarters, and will host a UN speaker to talk about examples of short-term and long-term strategies for an SDG's targets implementation plan.
