Progress report for
Supporting Comprehensive Sexuality Education in the Pacific
Achievement at a glance
UNFPA supported the University of the South Pacific (USP) to enhance training of teachers who teach in-school subjects containing CSE. USP is the premier tertiary institution in the Pacific that serves 22 countries and territories in the region. In the Solomon Islands, UNFPA partnered with the government to train teachers and rollout CSE nationally as an integrated curriculum.
In 2015, UNFPA supported South-South collaboration between Vanuatu and Fiji. A team of five representatives of the Ministry of Education and the National Youth Council of Vanuatu travelled to Fiji to share experiences with their counterparts.
In Kiribati, UNFPA supported the development and completion of student learning resources for levels 3 and 4.
Challenges faced in implementation
Social-cultural sensitivities and barriers still hinder the progress of the programme, especially in the rural areas.A limited pool of technical expertise in Pacific countries delays the execution of national programmes.
Delayed national financial transaction processes often resulted in deferred funding of programmes
Next Steps
UNFPA will continue to strengthen its partnership with USP as a means to mainstream CSE in teacher training with the aim of USP taking the lead as a regional hub on CSE. Work with the countries will continue with further rollout and development of CSE in Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Kiribati. Work plans for Samoa and Marshall Islands for 2016 have been finalised.Beneficiaries
