Progress report for
New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries Antarctic Research Programme
Achievement at a glance
New Zealand Antarctic Research contributed to the Joint US/NZ proposal which led to the establishment of the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area (MPA) by CCAMLR in 2017, the largest high seas marine protected area in the world. The Ross Sea Region MPA has been in force since December 2017. New Zealand led and funded research continues to be an essential component of the research and monitoring of the MPA.New Zealand continues to deliver the biennial Ross Sea Toothfish Stock Assessment which underpins the world-leading and precautionary management of the fishery. The Ross Sea Stock Assessment has been described by independent experts as world-leading.
Challenges faced in implementation
Research carried out in extreme polar conditions is subject to unique challenges. These are managed through the wealth of experience provided by the researchers, and the crew and operators of the research and fishing vessels used as research platforms.Next Steps
New Zealand will continue to contribute to CCAMLR Science as part of our obligations as a Member of the Antarctic Treaty System. The Ross Sea Region MPA is due to undergo its first 10-year management review in 2027. This will consider the research undertaken by all Members in the Area to ensure the MPA is still achieving its objectives.
Beneficiaries
Antarctica is preserved as a Region for Peace and Science for the benefit of all of the World. Antarctic Treaty Parties and in particular CCAMLR Members benefit directly from New Zealand's significant contribution to Antarctic Marine Research.
