Implementation of a digital system for tracking, reporting, and monitoring commercial fishing activity has provided for more accurate and up-to-date information to better inform decision-making by government and the fishing industry.The Fisheries (Geospatial Position Reporting) Regulations 2017 have been implemented. All commercial fishers are now required to report their catch and position electronically.
The Fisheries (Electronic Monitoring on Vessels) Regulations 2017 came into force in October 2018. The roll out of onboard cameras is nearly complete on in scope inshore vessels.
The Fisheries (Innovative Trawl Technologies) Regulations 2017 came into force in October 2017. This modified restrictions on trawl nets and enables commercial fishers to apply to trial and use new trawl gear for fishing, including nets. This has provided an enabling environment for the commercial use of approved, innovative trawl gear.
Beneficiaries
Increased fisheries data and enhanced verification provided by on-board cameras and electronic reporting improves fisheries management, providing better outcomes for all New Zealanders. Innovative trawl technology contributes to enhanced utilisation and better environmental outcomes through improved commercial fishing practices. Commercial fishers may also benefit from improved quality of catch, increasing value.
