Progress report for
Marine protected area research, monitoring and reporting: Ecological Integrity and Sentinel Site programmes
Achievement at a glance
Work from the Ecological Integrity Programme and Marine Sentinel Site Programme has concluded. Outputs from both programmes have been the foundations for the development and implementation of a Marine Monitoring and Reporting Framework for marine reserves in New Zealand. The Marine Monitoring and Reporting Framework will provide a nationally consistent and effective approach for monitoring and reporting on existing and new marine reserves and will ensure that monitoring is consistent over time with appropriate replication across ecosystems. The Marine Monitoring and Reporting Framework, combined with the Marine Ecosystems Research Programme, will assist evaluations of progress towards domestic and international conservation targets, including TeMana o Te Taiao–Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy, and will also inform ongoing management and compliance, marine reserve reviews, and new marine protectionBeneficiaries
Treaty partners (indigenous people of New Zealand), stakeholders, Government, science community, and the public all benefit from the increase of knowledge and understanding of NZ’s marine biodiversity. MPA management agencies will be better informed for making marine management decisions.
