Progress report for
Enhancing marine research and innovation cooperation along and across the Atlantic Ocean
Achievement at a glance
The OKEANO project, with an EU contribution of EUR 4 million, was launched in 2024 to support the implementation of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA) and its Declaration, including through the coordination of marine and maritime research and innovation activities with Atlantic Ocean stakeholders and the integration of newcomers to AAORIA, including low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, there are a series of Horizon Europe projects that support the Alliance goals, including a number of EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ projects. The very successful Youth Ambassador and Blue Schools programme of AAORIA continues within the framework of discussions undertaken with the Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP), leading towards the launch of the Blue Intergenerational Programme.Next Steps

Actions
In 2023, the AAORIA Annual Forum was held in Cape Town, South Africa. Two Areas of Action were agreed:1. Increasing the understanding of the relationship between the ocean and climate and developing outcome-oriented science for mitigating and adapting to the consequences of climate change, particularly for the benefit of increasing resilience of coastal communities – led by the EU; and
2. Coordinating Atlantic Ocean observing and improving modelling capacities, including to support marine ecosystems /biodiversity - led by the US.
In 2024, several workshops were held with a wide range of stakeholders in the areas of coastal resilience, and ocean observing and modelling.
In October 2024, AAORIA Forum in Ottawa confirmed the work on the two Areas of Actions and added additional common work streams. For the EU-led coastal resilience Area of Action, the Coastal Resilience Knowledge Hub was launched at the Forum.
