Actions
A large number of programmes have been developed and are being implemented at national, regional, and global levels, covering a large spectrum of activities, looking at biodiversity conservation but also at the root causes of biodiversity loss e.g. agri-food systems, or unsustainable production and consumption practices. One of our flagship initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa is NaturAfrica, which demonstrates the EU’s commitment to protecting biodiversity while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Recent initiatives announced at the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP16) in 2024 include:
- a comprehensive Capacity Development Programme, with a budget of EUR 69 million over six years, that addresses a broad spectrum of needs and engages a diverse range of stakeholders across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
- a EUR 48 million programme to help developing countries protect and sustainably manage wildlife, with a strong focus on combating trafficking.
- a EUR 40 million Global Ocean Programme to support developing countries in their efforts to conserve and sustainably manage biodiversity in the high seas, particularly through the BBNJ Agreement.
These efforts align with the EU's broader goals under the Global Gateway strategy and with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
