Progress report for
Accelerating maritime spatial planning
Achievement at a glance
Following the first MSProadmap (2017-2021), the European Union and the IOC-UNESCO launched an “Updated Joint Roadmap to accelerate Marine/Maritime Spatial Planning processes worldwide” - MSProadmap (2022-2027) at the 3rd International MSP Conference in November 2022 in Barcelona. The MSProadmap (2022-2027) covers six priority areas divided into cross-cutting and thematic pillars:
A- Cross-cutting
1) Knowledge support
2) Capacity development and awareness
3) Transboundary cooperation
B- Thematic
1) Climate-smart MSP
2) Marine protection and restoration actions
3) Sustainable blue economy
The new MSProadmap (2022-2027) is supported by a new project MSPglobal 2.0, that started in July 2023 and will continue till June 2025. The EU supports this project with a budget of EUR 1 million as indicated in the commitment. Overall, MSPglobal 2.0 aims to enlarge and strengthen the pool of practitioners and stakeholders ready to support MSP. For that, it co-develops tools complementary to the MSPglobal Guide, together with experts working on specific topics, such as data, climate change and ecosystem restoration. New capacity development and awareness opportunities will be created through a multilingual online training, the 6th edition of the MSPforum and
communication activities. At regional level, the project focuses on 2 transboundary pilots in the Gulf of Guinea and Western Pacific. Through national and regional activities, the project provides support towards institutionally strengthened MSP processes
