Ms. Esenam Nyador
Founder and Head, Miss Taxi Ghana
Ms. Esenam Nyador Esenam Nyador started as one of Ghana's handful of female taxi drivers in 2013, when her ambition to train as a truck driver, failed in an industry that is entirely dominated by men when she finished her first degree at the University of Ghana. Esenam chose taxi driving amidst the hostility served her by the local taxi unions because it is a very non-traditional thing to do as a woman in Ghana and considered her choice of livelihood as a gender statement that stirred up social discussions. Armed with a post-graduate thesis research into Occupational Gender Segregation at the same university, Esenam succeeded in generating industry conversations in the transport sector, which has led to partnering with other key industry players, in the training of women in the operation of varied capacities of vehicles, enabling their economic participation in the transport service sector in Ghana. Currently, with the support of partners such as the Germany Development Cooperation (GIZ Ghana), Scania West Africa and the Open Society Foundations, Miss Taxi Ghana rolled out its latest initiative, ‘She Drives The City Project’ in 2019, to empower many more women with skills and related training, to enable them to contribute to the development of the transport service provision sector in Ghana.
