Mr. Manuel Barange
Director, Fisheries Division, FAO
Professor Manuel Barange has been the Director of the Fisheries Division at the FAO since 2016, responsible for all technical issues regarding global and regional fisheries and aquaculture, including: scientific developments and needs; fish production and consumption; policy development and implementation; management and sustainability status; food and livelihood dependency; trade and markets and information and technology development, among others. Previously he was Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Science at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK, and Chair of the Science Committee of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Manuel is an Honorary Professor at the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Exeter, UK. He is a global expert on the impacts of Climate Change impacts on marine ecosystems, fisheries and aquaculture, and on the interactions between natural and socio-economic drivers of change. Prof Barange has over 120 academic publications and has edited two books. He is a Review Editor of the forthcoming IPCC Special Report on Oceans and the Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC). In 2010 he was awarded the UNESCO-IOC Roger Revelle Medal for his contribution to ocean science.
