Mr. KEITH H. CHRISTIE, was elected Vice-chair of the Bureau for the Preparatory Process of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, representing the West European and Others Group. (16 May 2011 - 3 June 2012).
Mr. Christie is Assistant Deputy Minister of the Global Issues Branch of the Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada. Mr. Christie was appointed to the position of Assistant Deputy Minister, Global Issues, in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade on April 1, 2008. In this capacity, he is responsible for the formulation and delivery of Canada?s foreign policy across the broad range of multilateral organizations to which Canada belongs including the United Nations and its specialized agencies, the G8, the G20, APEC, La Francophonie, the Commonwealth and the Arctic Council. He is also responsible for leading thematic work in Foreign Affairs on international economic, environmental and energy policy, international development, human rights, democratic governance, and humanitarian policy. Mr. Christie is also Canada?s Foreign Affairs G8/G20 sous-Sherpa.
Keith Christie joined the Canadian foreign service in 1976. He has had four postings, most recently as Canada?s Ambassador to Cuba (1997-2000) and Mexico (2000-2003). In Ottawa, he served in the Latin America Division (1981-83), the GATT Affairs Division (1983-86), as Asia-Pacific Coordinator, Office of Multilateral Trade Negotiations (1989-1991), Director for Policy Coordination of the Office of North American Free Trade Negotiations (1991-1992), Director of the Economic and Trade Policy Division in Policy Staff (1992-1996), Chief Negotiator for Canada of the NAFTA Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (1993), Chief Negotiator for Canada of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (1995- 1996), Assistant Secretary of Federal-Provincial Relations, Intergovernmental Affairs, Privy Council Office (1996-1997), Deputy Secretary (Policy) also in Intergovernmental Affairs, Privy Council Office (2003-2005), and Director General of The Environment and Energy Bureau (2005-March 2008).
Keith Christie earned a B.A. (Honours) in Latin American Studies from the University of Toronto in 1971 and a doctorate in History from Oxford University in 1974. He was the Rhodes Scholar from British Columbia in 1971.
