Mr. John M. Matuszak (Ex-member)
Elected Vice-Chair - Western European and Others Group (16 May 2010 - 16 May 2011)
Mr. John M. Matuszak was elected Vice-chair of the Bureau for the Preparatory Process of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, representing the West European and Others Group (16 May 2010 - 16 May 2011).
Mr. John M. Matuszak is Division Chief for Sustainable Development and Multilateral Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
As the Division Chief for Sustainable Development and Multilateral Affairs in the State Department´s Office of Environmental Policy (ENV) since 2002, Mr. Matuszak leads a group that manages U.S.G. involvement with the UN Environment Program (UNEP), The UN Commission on Sustainable Development and the Committee on Environmental Policy of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). His division also leads State Department involvement in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Environmental Policy Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). They are responsible for State Department compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and for reviews of the Environmental Impact Assessments for projects under consideration for funding by Multilateral Development Banks. He also advises and participates on U.S. Delegations to meetings of many Multilateral Environmental Agreements and fora (CBD, POPS, CCD and forests). He also Participated in the WSSD JPOI preparations where he was responsible for negotiating the Africa, SIDS and other regional implementation chapters. He was recently elected a Vice President and member of the Bureau of the Governing Council of UNEP for 2009 ? 2010 where he represents the UN Region including Western Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. He also has served as a Bureau member for the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy. He is an International Advisor to the UNEP International Environmental Technology Center in Osaka/Shiga, Japan, a member of the Advisory Board for the Marrakesh Process on Sustainable Consumption and Production and is on the Bureau of the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy.
Mr. Matuszak has also served as a High Level Advisory for UNEP?s fourth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-4). He was elected to the UN expert Committee for Energy and Natural Resources for Development 1998-2002 were he served as a vice
President and chaired the water subgroup. He was also on the advisory committee of the International Conference on Water and Sustainable Development organized by the World Water Council and the Government of France (1998).
In addition to his work in the State Department, Mr. Matuszak has worked for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) as the Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean, in the Global Center for Environment.
From 1994 - 1997 Mr. Matuszak was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Diplomacy Fellow at the Department of State, where he held the Parker-Gentry Biodiversity Fellowship. During that time, he worked on biodiversity, plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and forestry issues.
Mr. Matuszak has received numerous Honor Awards from the State Department for his work on chemicals, biodiversity, agriculture, forests and environmental governance.
From 1979 - 1986 Mr. Matuszak worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) at the University of the Virgin Islands. While there, he focused on natural resource management and agriculture, working in extension, teaching and research. He worked extensively with the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to his work in the USVI, Mr. Matuszak also served as a consultant to numerous projects in both the Greater and Lesser Antilles.
From 1983 -1986 Mr. Matuszak served as an Advisor to the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) for the study they conducted on "Renewable Natural Resource Technologies for the U.S. Insular Possessions."
Mr. Matuszak has attended Cornell University, Michigan State University and Aquinas College, in the Biological Sciences. He is married with no children.
