
Mr. Alok Rath
Country Director Uganda and South Sudan of VSO International
A career spanning over twenty five years in research, teaching and international development with progressively senior management roles and work experience in International development organisations such as VSO, Save the Children, Action Aid, and GTZ (Project). Alok has managed and led large-scale programmes in both development as well as humanitarian contexts including the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004) and the East Africa Drought and Famine (2011/12). He has travelled extensively and been exposed to development contexts in countries such as India, Nepal, Afghanistan, UK, Egypt, Kenya-Somalia, Rwanda and currently in Uganda-South Sudan. Working with a range of primary actors, local civil society partners, other stakeholders, donors, and governments have helped him deepen his understanding of the structural causes of poverty, discrimination and marginalization and thereby contribute to influence of a number of complex policy and strategic positions in which the rights of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable and poorest are expected to be realized. Dr. Rath has a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology with special interest in the interplay and mutual influence of social structures, economic organisations and ecological dynamics.
