Women in Power and Decision Making: Building a Different World
Santiago, Chile
UN Women, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile and the National Women's Service
Background
On 26 June 2014, UN Women launched a year-long Beijing+20 campaign that aims to ignite global discourse and renew political commitment to accelerate implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Campaign emphasizes that the comprehensive affirmation of women's rights and empowerment adopted in the Platform in 1995 by 189 governments remains only partially fulfilled.
To galvanise political commitment towards achieving gender equality, major events in all regions of the world, as well as online debates on issues ranging from human rights to climate change and economy, will review the gains made and the gaps that remain, identifying mechanisms to accelerate real and transformative change in women's lives.
In this context, a high level global meeting will be hosted by the Government of Chile in collaboration with UN Women in Santiago de Chile on 27-28 February 2015. The meeting will invite women leaders from all walks of life -public and private- to reflect on the last 20 years in terms of achievements made, what has changed as a result of having women in leadership positions, and what more remains to be done to ensure, in the words of the Beijing Platform for Action, "women's equal access to and full participation in power structures and decision making".
