The challenge and purpose of the Breakfast Dialogue Energy is central to the achievement of both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. Still some 1 billion lack access to electricity, 85% of them living in rural areas. For over 70 per cent of those who gain access in rural areas, decentralized systems based on renewable energy will be the most cost-effective solution (IEA, 2017).
The SDG7 Technical Advisory Group, convened by UN DESA, proposed a ‘Global Agenda for Accelerated SDG7 Action’ as a foundation for concerted action by all stakeholders in support of SDG7**. One of the key priorities of this proposed Global Agenda is harnessing the potential of decentralized renewable energy solutions, being key to universal energy access provided in line with needs and empowerment of people, companies and communities.
Global SDG7 Action Plan on decentralized renewable energy In order to contribute to this priority of the global agenda the convening governments and organisations believe a strategic and bold plan of action is much needed. Strong engagement and cooperation between governments, international finance institutions, businesses and civil society is crucial. For this reason, we are inviting a selected group of high-level representatives from above mentioned stakeholder groups to explore together: How can we concretely support the uptake of decentralized renewable energy solutions – in policy, finance and multi stakeholder cooperation, and to sketch a Global SDG7 Action Plan on decentralized renewable energy?
The session will build on the SDG7 Policy Brief #24 “Energy Sector Transformation: Decentralized Renewable Energy for Universal Energy Access”.
We are looking forward to a productive discussion and welcoming you at the German House.
*The Brooklyn Coalition consists of the Governments of Kenya, Nepal and The Netherlands, civil society partners Hivos, Energia and SNV and private sector partners Selco India and Schneider Electric
