Bonn 2011 Conference: "The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus-Water Resources in the Green Economy?

The Germany Federal Government is organizing an international conference in Bonn to examine the nexus of water, energy and food security. The event will be hosted in the former German federal parliament, the Bundestag.
Organized under the auspices of Germany?s Federal Development Ministry (BMZ) and Federal Environment Ministry (BMU), the conference is a step in the run-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (?Rio plus 20?) scheduled for 2012. With the thematic focus in Bonn on the interrelationships between water, energy and food security, the Federal Government has decided to address an important aspect of the preparatory process for the Rio+20 conference and take a rigorously cross-sectoral approach to the development of a ?green economy? that can facilitate sustainable development and alleviate poverty.
The Bonn conference pursues two objectives: on the one hand, to develop cross-sector solutions for achieving water, energy and food security; on the other, to position the interface of water, energy and food security within the discourse of the ?Rio plus 20? process and ?green economy?.
The international participants at this two-day conference will include around 400 high-ranking decision-makers and decision-shapers from the spheres of politics, academia, the United Nations, civil society and the private sector.
The conference is being carefully prepared through a participatory process (the Bonn 2011 Process). The overall concept is designed to produce concrete outcomes in plenary sessions, workshops and cross-sectoral dialogue formats. The aim is to arrive at decisions that will make a real difference in terms of sustainable impacts.
