Global Online Consultation - First Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergies - 2023

synergies

Context

The UN Secretary-General's 2023 priorities emphasized that "Climate action is the 21st century's greatest opportunity to drive forward all the Sustainable Development Goals." However, as we approach the halfway mark to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, progress towards achieving the SDGs and addressing climate change is alarmingly insufficient.

Despite the vital role of climate and SDG synergies in advancing both the 2030 Agenda and the Paris goals, current analysis and data on their interlinkages remain scattered across various sources, lacking a cohesive global authoritative resource dedicated to this critical topic.

First Global Report

In May 2023, the Expert Group on Climate and SDG Synergy was co-convened by UNDESA and UNFCCC Secretariat, comprising 14 renowned experts from diverse backgrounds. Their pivotal task is to develop the First Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergies.

This report aims to comprehensively assess, guide, and provide a practical framework to promote synergistic action between climate and the SDGs. By identifying barriers, proposing innovative solutions, and fostering collaboration, the report aims to pave the way for a just, equitable, and climate-compatible future.

Global Online Consultation

To gather valuable inputs from stakeholders, the Secretariat of Climate and SDG Synergy organized an online consultation, which was open to Member States, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector, philanthropic organizations, youth groups, and others.

This consultation served to:

  • Encourage broad and inclusive engagement on advancing synergistic implementation of climate and SDGs targets.
  • Enhance stakeholders' contributions to inform intergovernmental processes on the significance of climate and SDG Synergies.
  • Contribute to inform the drafting of the in-depth and rigorous analysis on climate and SDG synergies, that will be prepared in view to the major summits in 2024, including the Summit for the Future.
